Medieval Dinner and Show at Visegrad Castle

Introduction:

Sometimes when exploring castles or sights abroad, it can feel like walking into a fairy tale. The towering walls and grand views of nature surrounding ancient castles can take your breath away. Having grown up with stories of knights, queens, and kings I have always enjoyed learning about medieval traditions and the countries that partook in them.

So I was very excited when, during my first week in Hungary, the Hungarian Fulbright Commission treated us to a medieval show and feast at Visegrad Castle, also known as the Citadel. Once a functioning fortress that protected the area from invasion, it is now a historical site and host of exhibitions and reenactments. The reenactments are to show not only the traditional weapons of the Hungarian medieval era but also the skills of the knights. Throughout Hungary’s history there have been many battles and invasions. They are very proud of their strength and will to survive. This pride and strength is evident even in this modern reenactment and it made for a spectacular show of history brought to life.

Also fun fact: Vlad the Impaler (the inspiration for Count Dracula) was once held prisoner in Visegrad Castle!

What tradition did I learn about?:

We were welcomed into the castle by a live drum performance by two of the castle entertainers dressed in olive green and red tunics.
