A Beautiful Three Course Hungarian Meal

Introduction:

On one of my most recent Fulbright excursions, we were taken to see the beautiful architecture and art of the Art Nouveau era. Known for its stunning curves, depictions of nature, and vivid colors, Art Nouveau is one of my favorite styles. However, because this tour was so long, we were also treated to a fabulous Hungary lunch at the vibrant Csók Bisztró (which means Kiss Cafe). The inside of the building was beautiful and, though it was modern, it was the perfect setting for a day focused on beautiful things. The food was no exception.

What food did I try?:

We were served a three course meal, starting with traditional goulash and bread, then a pear salad, and finally a delicious dessert of somlói galuska (a sponge cake dessert with chocolate and cream). While I will touch on each dish, I will primarily focus on the goulash since that is one of Hungary’s national foods and a symbol of the country.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

The goulash was savory and warm. I loved the chucks of meat! They were extremely tender. The potatoes and carrots were almost soft and together the dish felt hearty after a long day of walking.

I was not a fan of the salad. There was something sour about it and even if I had like the dressing there was not enough to the ratio of lettuce that was there.
