Last week, I went on a trip I will never forget. My best friend from college, Anna, met me in Stockholm. We had talked about taking a winter trip during our semester breaks since we both arrived in Europe in October. The day had finally come.
Our biggest adventure started at the train station. We took an overnight train all the way north to Abisko. It is far above the Arctic Circle. That means it is very, very far north. The train felt cozy. We had bunk beds in our own train car. Outside the window, everything was dark and covered in snow. When we arrived in Abisko, I could not believe how cold it was. The air felt sharp in my nose, and my eyelashes almost froze! The snow sparkled like glitter, and the mountains were quiet and white.
That night, we went outside to look for the northern lights. We stood in the snow, wearing so many layers that we could barely move. At first, the sky was black and full of stars. Then, slowly, green light began to glow above us. It moved as if it were dancing in the sky. We both just stared. It felt like magic. It was like something you see in a science magazine, but it was right before our eyes.
