Food is one of the first ways we experience a new culture. Since arriving in Lisbon almost three weeks ago, I have been living with a host family and learning Portuguese. While I have not yet explored many restaurants, I have experienced something just as meaningful: home cooking. One of the first meals my host mother prepared for me helped me feel welcomed and introduced me to everyday food culture in Portugal.
One of the most memorable meals I have had so far was a pasta dish my host mother prepared. It included pasta mixed with fresh cheese, hard-boiled egg, tomato, avocado, parsley, and a light dressing made from olive oil and mayonnaise. It was simple but flavorful, and it felt both comforting and new at the same time.
I felt grateful and welcomed. Moving to another country can feel overwhelming at first, but sharing a home-cooked meal made Lisbon start to feel like home. The flavors were fresh and balanced, and I appreciated how much care she put into preparing it. It reminded me that food is not just about nutrition. It is about hospitality and connection.
