Traditions That Bring People Together in Bavaria

Introduction:

While living in Munich, I have learned that traditions here are not only reserved for major holidays. Many traditions appear in everyday life, helping people welcome newcomers, celebrate the seasons and mark important moments in local history. Some traditions take place in large festivals with music and dancing, while others happen quietly in workplaces or neighborhoods. Together, these traditions help people feel connected to one another and to the past.

What tradition did I learn about?:

One tradition I experienced soon after arriving in Munich is called an Einstand. When someone starts a new job or joins a new group, it is common for them to bring food for everyone to share. It is a simple way to introduce yourself and begin building connections with colleagues.

For my Einstand at the Institute of Statistics at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, I brought a pumpkin pie (with ingredients, like graham crackers and pumpkin purée, that I could only find at a local American grocery store!) to share with the team. Gathering together to enjoy something homemade created a relaxed moment to talk and get to know one another.
