Protecting Local Trees

Introduction:

In a nearby forest, the town of Cheb is working to protect a local type of tree that is important to the environment. It is called the Linden or Lípa Tree. To raise awareness, elementary school students decorated the trees with faces. This creative project helps draw attention to the trees and reminds visitors why nature should be protected.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The trees are tall, with strong trunks and green leaves. Their bark can be rough and textured. The added faces make each tree unique -- some look friendly, others look funny or serious.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

When I saw the trees, I felt curious and interested. It was fun to search for the faces, but it also made me think about how important the trees are to the surrounding nature and community.

Where does it live?:

These trees live in a local forest, where they grow with other plants. The area has lots of sunlight, water and soil that help them survive. There is a big river that runs through the forest, as well.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

The trees use sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. Their roots take in water and nutrients from the soil, and their leaves help them exchange gases with the air.
