The Nature of Alishan

This past weekend, my friends and I spent our weekend in Alishan (阿里山, pronounced ah-lee-shan) in Chiayi (嘉義, jee-eye-ee). Alishan's natural beauty and culture is some of the most renowned in Taiwan.

Alishan is deep the mountains of Chiayi County. The train starts from Chiayi City Station
The red and yellow train that carries passengers from the city to the mountain is very famous in Taiwan
Locals and tourists take pictures and wave at the iconic train as it passes
The train is much narrower than most Taiwanese trains, allowing it to wind through the mountains
The ride to Fenqihu Village, the first major stop, takes the passengers about 4,500 feet above sea level
Fenqihu serves as a halfway point between Chiayi City and the deep mountains of Alishan
The village has a beautiful old street where you can find many local specialties
The Alishan region is very famous for tea, especially oolong. There are many spots to try traditional tea in Fenqihu
