It is hard to believe that I am beginning my fourteenth month in Guatemala, and that I have been in my site, Palestina de Los Altos, for a full year. On Tuesday March 4th, I was sitting on the plane, waiting for my flight to take off from Miami International Airport in Florida to La Aurora (the dawn) International Airport in Guatemala City, I wrote that I was “feeling excited and nervous and ready to be thrown into it all. If I can have any positive impact I think I’ll be happy.” This is something I try to regularly think back to, especially during low moments or times when I am unsure of the significance of my impact as a volunteer. If I can have any positive impact during my service, that is what is most important, and I am happy to say that I think, while small, I have had some positive impacts since being here.
