One of the first things that motivated me to come to Japan was watching anime. I was first introduced to anime when I was in elementary and middle school. I enjoy many different genres, but one genre that made me especially curious about visiting Japan is called "slice of life" anime. Slice of life is a genre that focuses on ordinary, everyday moments in the lives of characters. These shows made me want to walk through Japanese neighborhoods, see cherry blossoms, ride trains, visit local shops and experience daily life in Japan for myself. Being here in Japan for a semester feels like one of my childhood dreams is coming true.
Oftentimes, I think to myself, “This feels just like anime.” Riding trains in Japan is one example. Hearing the train announcements, watching the trains pass by, riding a themed train or experiencing rush hour (even though it can be very stressful) all remind me of scenes I have seen in anime. These moments may seem simple, but to me, they feel special because I used to only see them through a screen.
I was also lucky enough to see the cherry blossoms from the beginning to the end of the season. Walking through the streets while the cherry blossoms were in full bloom was an amazing experience. They add so much beauty to the city.
