I was a little bit shocked when I first saw a chestnut, lying in the grass in one of the local parks. It had not been broken open and the spiky outer shell was still intact. I honestly thought I was looking at a sea urchin!
Chestnuts grow on trees. These trees are abundant in the mountains of Asturias, but they can also be found in parks around the city. Chestnut trees grow mostly in Europe, but there are some in the United States, too!
The relatively mild and wet climate of Asturias is the perfect environment for the chestnut tree to grow in.
We aren't worried about chestnuts in Asturias. While there aren't as many trees in the United States, there are plenty here! Chestnuts are just as popular among birds and squirrels as they are among humans; this is why, many times, the chestnuts you find on the ground in parks have already been opened and eaten by an animal. However, given the abundance of chestnut trees on Asturias, this is not a problem!
