Meet Zinnia and Traeson: A Chat with Two Future Football Stars!

When it rains in the morning students typically don’t come to school until the rain stops, and when it rains all day families often treat it like a snow day and don’t send their students to school at all.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

The students eat lunch at the school cafeteria everyday. Lunch is from 11:30am to 1pm and lunch at the school costs $5bz ($2.5usd). We have lunch together on the school picnic tables while the lunchtime chess club meets. Zinnia and Traeson could not name just one food that is their favorite; Zinnia loves to eat burgers, fries, pizza, and burritos and Traeson prefers fried chicken, burgers, and fries.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

English, Belizean kriol, and Garifuna are spoken at school. To say good morning in Belizean kriol you say maanin maanin and in Garifuna you say buiti banafi. Sometimes, just a simple "yes” will do.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Some common girl names are Taryn, Jazay, and Alissa while some common boy names are Zayden, Darion, and Terrin. However, lots of kids have nicknames. Some of my favorites from my school are Beans, Barrel, Bonbon, and Linlin.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

The students study math, language arts, Belizean studies (which includes culture and history), religion, and Garifuna. Both Zinnia and Traeson said their favorite subject is math!
