How can farms increase the number of their trees? Starting projects like beekeeping, fish farming and mushroom growing creates businesses that don't require cutting down more trees. Bees even need more trees to get nectar and make honey! Changing sources of fuel, like biogas or using fast-growing bamboo, are ideas that are currently being tested. We also plant trees! Fruit trees are a great starting point, and we're also testing out replacing fences with living trees and cactus-like plants.
How does deforestation affect the climate? Do we cut down trees to make money? How can we keep drying tobacco without running out of firewood? These are some of the questions we're asking ourselves at schools, in government meetings and on farms. The answers to these questions show us why it's important to watch deforestation.
