Korean Buddhism is deeply connected to the environment. Temples are always built in the mountains, deep in nature, far away from busy cities. This helps people practice what Buddhism teaches, like calmness, focus, and deep appreciation for the natural world. 금강사 (Geum-gang-sa) is actually located right in the center of 구미 (Gu-mi), just across the street from the giant high-speed train station. However, it is located on the top of a hill, where it is surrounded by trees, creating a quiet forest with fresh air and mountain air. It was very easy for me to feel at peace there, and I was able to meditate, reflect and feel at ease.
Historically, Korean monks chose natural places because they thought that nature helped people understand the teachings of Buddha. Even today, the environment plays a very important role. The sounds of wind, temple bells, and birds, combined with the artistic paintings, colors, and architecture, blend perfectly. The tradition of visiting temples is deeply connected to the natural surroundings, connecting people to something bigger than themselves.
Visiting temples makes me feel a deeper connection to Korea, and it helps me understand the country in a more meaningful way. If you ever visit Korea, you should definitely go to at least one temple. There are actually thousands of temples all across the country!
If you could explore a peaceful temple, what would you hope to discover there? You can learn so much about Korean culture and history, and you may even learn something new about yourself too!
