The heat is a major challenge for most people. There is a lot of AC, but it is expensive and consumes a lot of power. That is why the schools where I work do not have it, and many people do not have it in their homes either. Many things shut down for a few hours in the middle of a hot day, kind of like a siesta.
People have been adapting to this environment by taking nap breaks or closing their business in the middle of the day. They also use fans to keep cool. When it is really hot, people will use AC, but they try to limit its use. If they don't, there might not be enough power. When I first got here in August, large parts of the island, including Taichung, lost power for several hours because too many people were using too much electricity.
