What main languages are spoken here?:

The main language spoken in Galicia is Spanish, also called Castellano by locals because of its origin in the Castilla region of Spain. People call it Castellano instead of Spanish to emphasize the fact that there are other languages or dialects spoken across the country, meaning that Castellano is not the only Spanish language.

The other main language of Galicia is Gallego. In the recent past during the reign of Francisco Franco, this language was mainly spoken only in small towns, as its use was surpressed across the region by the government. However, the language was kept alive throughout the region, and after Franco's death it was named the co-official language of the region. The Xunta(the government of Galicia) uses Gallego on its website and official communications, and Gallego is a subject that all students must take in school. Many of my teachers speak Gallego in their classes, but many people in the major cities like Vigo or A Coruna don't speak Gallego as fluently.
