Many parts of the forest are still growing back after the eruption because "old growth" forests (the ones with the really big trees and moss that look like jungles or an enchanted forest) can take hundreds of years to re-grow.
The weather here is much chillier than in Santiago. Part of that is because of the wind, but Puerto Varas is also farther south. Because we are below the equator, going further south means the climate gets colder, all the way down to Antarctica. It also gets colder the higher you travel in the mountains. The Osorno Volcano is so tall that you can always see snow on the top, even in the summer!
