Although they were brought to the area to be hunted for sport, some fallow deer escaped their parks and proceeded to spread across England and Wales. They’re survivors, able to live in a variety of habitats, ranging from cool and wet to hot and dry.
In nature, fallow deer need to worry about wolves, cougars and bears. The deer of Deer Park, however, are well protected from these natural predators. Humans pose the greatest threat, but these particular deer don’t have anything to worry about. In fact, an urban legend that claims that during the World War II meat shortages, the deer in Deer Park were reclassified as vegetables to protect them from being collected by the Ministry of Food.
