You’ll come to understand the perspectives of the people in your community and what issues matter to them, as well as how your community fits into global society. Learning a new language will also help you connect with other people. Even if you are not fluent, people will appreciate your effort to communicate with them.
By being involved in your community, networking, and learning new skills, new possibilities will present themselves to you. Be open-minded! There may be opportunities to work or study in a new place. Changing locations is a good way to gain new perspectives on the world and your life. In my case, the Fulbright program enabled me to come to Germany. Of course, there are Fulbright programs in other countries worldwide, and there are also other sponsored abroad programs you can pursue. If you are starting college soon, I encourage you to ask your college career center, enrichment office and faculty mentors for suggestions, as they may know of opportunities you can pursue or put you in connection with people who can help you further.
