This week we traveled to the northernmost point of the U.S. (Point Barrow) as well as Plover Point, which is ATV access only due to sandy terrain. Plover Point is a couple of miles away from the northernmost point. Another day, we went to Walakpa River by ATV, which is approximately 10 miles south of Utqiaġvik.
The farthest we have traveled has been to Walakpa River by ATV, 10 miles south of Utqiaġvik, and Iko Bay by boat, approximately 20 miles east from Utqiaġvik.
This week, I got around by pickup truck on gravel roads, by ATV on the beach and muddy areas, by boat in the Elson Lagoon and Arctic Ocean and by foot in Utqiaġvik.
The most interesting place I visited this week was definitely the heritage center in Utqiaġvik, which currently has expositions about the North Slope culture and traditions. Visiting this museum helped me understand a lot more about the place we are at. With respect to sampling, the most interesting place we have been to was the mouth of Walakpa River, where there is a monument of a plane crash from 1935. In that same spot, we were able to see remains of sod houses from many years ago.
