And just like that, our journey together has come to an end! Although I’ll still be in Colombia until October of this year, our shared classroom time and articles will be wrapping up.
I have now lived in Colombia for a year and a half, and it has been the experience of a lifetime. I have been immersed in a different culture and language in a way I would have never thought possible. The small town where I live and work has become home. I’ve built relationships with community members and students. It will be difficult to leave, but I will carry all that I’ve learned with me moving forward.
I have learned a lot, too! Being able to practice Spanish in a Spanish-speaking community has helped me to solidify my grasp of the language, after initially learning it in a classroom like yours. I have learned about myself, and I have grown a lot. Plus, I have had the opportunity to explore Colombia, an incredibly diverse and interesting country.
Writing for you has helped me reflect on my time here in a way I truly appreciate. Writing field notes on transportation, food and my community has helped me realize how much I have learned over the course of my time here.
