Thanksgiving Traditions in America

I think this is because I just love the flavor of pumpkin, and I also have a big sweet tooth. Most pumpkin pies are made using flour, canned pumpkin, evaporated milk, eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.

Today, most of the Thanksgiving holiday is spent cooking and preparing each of the dishes for the meal. Many people will fast all day until Thanksgiving dinner is served—usually somewhere between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for most families. Often times, family members will travel great distances to be together on this one day. After everyone has gathered together around the dinner table, and before eating the meal, many families will share what they are most thankful for this year.

Since we are no longer an agricultural society, common things for us to be thankful for now include being with family, being in good health, having a home, having enough food to eat, and having loved ones to share this special day with. Other than traveling, cooking, and eating, popular Thanksgiving Day activities include watching American football games on television and volunteering to hold food drives or to prepare a Thanksgiving Day meal for those who are less fortunate.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

As the name implies, the American Thanksgiving holiday is rooted in the practice of simply “giving thanks.” And although it is now less common for us to celebrate a successful autumn harvest, we still have many things in our daily lives to thankful for. What’s more, mealtime is a wonderful way for families to come together, to pause, to reflect, and to enjoy one another’s company.
