The Start of Our Journey "Down Under"

To learn about ways to protect freshwater sources, I studied chemistry and environmental science at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York. It was there that I had the opportunity to work in a research lab for the first time, and I learned that we can perform experiments to answer scientific questions and come up with solutions to environmental challenges. During my third year at Skidmore, I studied abroad for a semester in Portugal, where I learned that water pollution is a challenge faced by people all around the world. I figured that to solve a problem that big, I would need to work with people from all around the world toward a solution.

I applied for a Fulbright research fellowship in Australia, so I could collaborate with environmental engineers who are working to improve water quality. An environmental engineer is someone who designs systems to solve environmental problems. I work with environmental engineers at the University of Wollongong to design wastewater treatment systems that prevent pollutants from entering lakes and streams. This involves building a wastewater treatment system, treating a water sample and then analyzing the treated water with computers to see if we were able remove the pollutants. Through this research, I’ve learned how to become a better problem- solver, especially when it comes to problems in the environment.

Having strong problem-solving skills has really helped me outside the lab, as well as I adjust to all the challenges that come with living in a new place. From navigating a new public transportation system to figuring out how to get the really big spider out of my house, I have learned a lot in my time here so far.
