The area known today as Ráquira was founded in 1580 but was originally inhabited by the natives of Colombia (known as Muisca) since long before that time. The Muisca people were known for their intricate pottery and jewelry craftsmanship. Their traditions for artisanal goods remained influential even after the Spanish conquest of Colombia in the 1500’s.
The soil of Ráquira has been rich with clay for centuries, making this area an asset to both Muisca and Colombian cultures and customs. Aside from its use in handcrafted pottery, clay was also used (and still is used) to build houses in Ràquira.
