This tree grows in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions because it needs lots sun to survive and these areas are sunny almost year-round. The ground also must be clay-like, as it is in Spain.
Two types of fungi can cause cankers in the tree, but luckily that doesn't happen often enough to endanger them. Cypress trees can survive for over 1000 years in the wild, so they are incredibly strong and durable.
Humans do impact the livelihood of these trees, because the trees are harvested for their essential oils and wood. These two resources are used for cosmetics, furniture and coffins. The rate of deforestation is currently sustainable, meaning the trees that are cut down are being replaced with new ones. Even so, humans should make sure to protect this species.
