Just Getting Around

Introduction:

Spain has a lot of industry and consequently many cities. In these cities, parking is difficult and owning a car is more expensive. Therefore, public transportation is used more often than not. To accommodate all the users of public transportation, there are metro systems in major cities like Barcelona and Madrid. There are also public bus systems, cabs and our own good, old-fashioned two feet.

How do people get around?:

When getting around a smaller city, like Salamanca, it is easier to just walk places. Normally, in the time it takes to hail a cab or figure out a bus route, you would already be at your destination. It takes about 15 minutes for me to walk to my school. This allows me to get some good exercise while not taking too much time out of my day. However, when I travel around Spain, I am more likely to use the metro. For example, the infrastructure of Madrid is complicated and consequently hard to navigate if you aren't familiar with the streets. The metro system is incredibly user-friendly. You just have to follow a line to get to your destination. Sometimes you must switch lines, but even that is a breeze if you follow the map. Although this system costs a couple more euro than the public buses, it is much easier to use. Additionally, the metro spans a larger area than the bus routes.
