Recycling in Switzerland

Introduction:

Figuring out the trash and recycling process was one of the most confusing aspects of integrating into life in Switzerland. Each canton (state) and town has their own trash and recycling regulations. Household trash must be thrown into special bags designated for trash, and each bag costs at least 1CHF (approximate 1USD). The high cost of trash bags is to encourage recycling.

What community need did I learn about?:

Recycling is highly regulated but also efficient in Switzerland. We sort trash into paper/cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminum. There is also a plastic bottle deposit system to encourage returns. Due to these regulations, Switzerland has one of the most efficient recycling programs in the world.

Why does the community have this need?:

Switzerland has strict recycling and trash regulations due to a commitment to environmental sustainability and resource conservation. Efficient waste management is necessary to minimize landfill use and reduce environmental footprints. Additionally, much of Swiss tourism is nature-based. Therefore, it is in the interest of tourists and locals alike to maintain the natural beauty of Switzerland.

Is this need being met? How?:

Over 85% of plastic bottles are returned in Switzerland, making this one of the highest return rates in the world!
