We do not usually think a lot about where our garbage goes, but in Australia it is thought about much more.
I learned about how our trash is collected. The way that our garbage is picked up in Australia is different than what it is back at home in the U.S. We all have a big garbage tote that we wheel to the end of our driveway every week and a truck comes and picks it up. Some of you may also have recycling, which is usually picked up every other week. Here in Australia, garbage, recycling and compost is picked up every week. This means that Australians have three different bins that they roll to the street each week.
The garbage totes in Australia are about half the size as what they are at home. This is because they have a recycling bin and a compost bin that are the same size. Compost is where you place the food you do not eat into a separate bin. The food is then taken and turned into soil. This helps eliminate extra waste in the landfill, which is where all of our garbage goes.
Just like in our community, in the Australian community there is a need for garbage collection. Another difference that I have noticed is that, in Australia, littering is taken very seriously. Littering is when you throw your garbage on the ground instead of in the trash bin.
