This year, the drought season extended from April to September. During the rainy season of October to March, it did not rain as much as it should have. Many farmers lost part of their crop because of the water scarcity, and it has caused the price of vegetables and corn products to spike nationwide.
One of the main reasons I came to Lesotho with Peace Corps is because of the grants that Peace Corps offers to its volunteers. Volunteers are able to apply for Peace Corps grants. These grant applications are written and developed by the community, so that the money can go to where it is needed most. Last month, my school applied for one of these grants to deepen the school's water well and build a second water well away from the school to be used exclusively by the community. I am happy to say that this month the grant was fully funded, and we are now in the process of starting the renovations and construction of the second water well!
