Unconventional Methods of Transport

There have been several instances of volunteers having close calls with collisions or drivers driving off the side of the road. Because of this, I usually only take taxis between my village and my town. If I need to go further than that, I hire a private car. It is a lot more expensive, and I don't get reimbursed for the expense, but it makes me feel much safer.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

Some families have donkeys, and occasionally I'll see a boy or young man riding a donkey while carrying a bag of grain or animal feed. However, donkeys are generally not used for long distance travel. Every once in a while, I will see a herd boy riding a horse while herding his flock, although it is more common in the highlands than in the lowlands. Herd boys are boys and young men that are hired by a family to live with their animals around the clock. They  sleep outside with the animals to ensure that none get stolen during the night, and during the day they herd the animals throughout the village so that they can graze. If the family is well-off, it will allow the herd boy to take a horse, but if it is not, the herd boy has to walk the entire day with the animals. It is by no means a glamourous job, but it is the only source of employment for many young men and teenage boys if they live in a rural village.
