A-salama! Hello! My name is Angela Pham. I grew up in southern California surrounded by different cultures and languages. My family encouraged me to travel, although we couldn't afford to travel outside of the country very much. In high school, I did an internship teaching English to Yemeni immigrants and learning Arabic from them. Then, I won a scholarship to study Arabic formally in Morocco. In May 2019, I graduated from university with a degree in humanities and economics for international development. I've been pursuing fluency in Arabic and competency in Middle Eastern cultures for the last six summers, and I had always dreamed of spending a full year immersed in another language.
Now in Tunisia, I am teaching in an English immersion preschool and after-school club program while living in La Marsa, a suburb of Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia. My busy little street is a 20-minute walk from the Mediterranean sea and I hear multiple languages spoken around me every day: French, Standard Arabic, Darija (Tunisian Arabic) and English. I love learning languages and teaching language because I believe language opens the door to understanding worldviews and perspectives from people we may initially think are very different from us--but on the inside, are often very similar.
