There are many festivals in Bhaktapur, so I have eaten a lot of chiura at this point in my journey.
Juju Dhau -- "King of Yogurt"
Juju dhau was one of the first new foods I tried in Nepal! It is a sweetened yogurt typically made in clay pots by the Newari people. On the streets of Bhaktapur there are signs for juju dhau everywhere and it is a very common addition to meals. Often, people also bring juju dhau for pujas, religious ceremonies. I eat juju dhau almost everyday with granola for a quick and yummy breakfast!
Bara - "Lentil Pancakes"
One of the things I miss making a lot here is pancakes. At home in the US, I make a lot of chocolate chip banana pancakes. Luckily, I found some pancakes to make here, too, only these pancakes aren't sweet. Bara is a spiced lentil pancake that is really easy to make. Typically, Newari people eat it as a snack, appetizer or during festivals. You can eat it plain or with meat and vegetables. I like it most with eggs!
Momos -- "Nepali Dumplings"
Probably one of the most popular dishes among visitors to Nepal is momos. Momos are made of meat, vegetables or cheese wrapped in dough. You can eat them steamed, fried or 'jhol' style (steamed in a spicy soup). In Bhaktapur, the most popular kind of momos is 'buff' momo, which is filled with buffalo meat. Eating 'buff' is very common among the Newari people in Bhaktapur and I've heard it's very tasty. For me though, I stick to the fried or jhol style chicken momos. Those are my favorite.
