Feliz Navidad from Madrid

Introduction:

Each country and each religion has special celebrations. In Western countries, like the ones we live in, Christmas is the most widely celebrated holiday. That is because the countries that colonized America (such as Great Britain and Spain) were Christian. Like a tree, Christianity has different branches: Catholicism, Protestantism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Anglicanism, Oriental Orthodoxy and Assyrians. In 2016, a survey conducted in Spain found that 67.8% of the population identified as Roman Catholic. Because of this, most Spanish people celebrate Christmas. However, each branch of Christianity has a different understanding of how to celebrate Christmas, and there are even different celebratory traditions within the branches depending on the culture, and Spaniards (people from Spain) definitely have their own special traditions.

What tradition did I learn about?:

Here are five different Christmas traditions I learned about:

  1. The traditional Spanish Christmas dinner is pavo trufado de Navidad (truffled Christmas turkey). In essence, this is turkey stuffed with mushrooms.
  2. Beléns (Bethlehems) are elaborate nativity scenes that are showed in various places.
