One would say, “I need three of those and four of these, please!”

And, I would reply, “But, sir, what are you referring to?”

Let’s talk about one of the most important things an engineer can learn at his or her young age, units.

When you ask your friends for water, do you ask for a cup of water or do you ask them for an eight fluid ounce of water? I bet it is easier to ask for a cup of water. In engineering, it is extremely important to measure the weight, dimensions and temperature of an object in units of measurement. Instead of going to the store and asking for three bananas' length of fabric, you would normally ask for three feet of fabric. Bananas could be used as a unit, but that is not common. The important thing about units is that they are commonly known and used. But not everywhere in the world uses the same measurements. In the United States, we measure length in inches and feet, and weight in pounds. And also, temperature is measured in Fahrenheit rather than Celsius. The units that the U.S. uses is actually not the norm compared to the rest of the world.

Each country has preferred way of measuring things. Let me pause here travel back a few hundred years when the United States declared its independence.
