Grüß Gott! (Good day!) My name is Anya von Wolff. I am 22 years old and grew up in San Francisco, California. Growing up in California, I loved exploring new places and events happening within my city and along the coast. My favorite part was finding small beach towns and spending the day exploring a new environment. For university, I decided to go across the country to upstate New York, attending Syracuse University. I not only got to experience the four seasons for the first time, but also studied Fashion Design and Business.
For my senior year thesis, I tried to answer the question: Can sustainability exist entirely within America’s borders? My thesis project reimagined the life of a garment, from its origins in fiber to its final form as fashion. My thesis featured locally sourced wool and natural dyes found within America. I wanted to continue my research and expand it to learn more techniques, and see what I could do with this concept in the world of knitwear.
I applied for a U.S. Fulbright Combined Grant to research Austrian knitting techniques and how I could create a garment from fiber to fashion in Austria. Being a combined Grantee means that not only am I able to do this amazing research, but I'm also a teaching assistant for students to learn English and taking classes at the local art university towards my Master's degree. I am currently living in Vienna, Austria, where I've been able to learn new ways in the fiber world and explore Austria. I am excited to share my new adventure with you and hear about your explorations through the school year!
