Being halfway across the world from home can be tough. You may not be able to eat your favorite foods or be able to communicate with people wherever you go. Those times can be hard, but there are exciting times too! From exploring new places to learning new ideas, going to a new country can be a wonderful experience! Learning about a new culture can really help you understand the people around you.
Each day I learn something interesting about Vietnam and its culture. I teach British English to students ages four years old and up from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Why British English? Well, I am not 100% sure. A lot of countries seem to like British English and it has been taught here for years. Now, you might be asking what makes British English so different from American English? You may notice some words are spelled with extra letters (such as color and colour) or pronounced a little differently (like mum and mom), but it can’t be too different, right?
Actually, it’s pretty different! Teaching British English is harder than it looks, especially because I didn’t learn it growing up. Suddenly, phrases like “Annie has an apple” becomes “Annie’s got an apple.” I get as confused as anyone else in the room. At first, I wondered why I couldn’t teach American English.
