Spain is home to many well-known dishes, such as paella and tapas. However, here in Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country and an autonomous community in northern Spain, you'll find a unique culinary tradition. One of the highlights is pintxos, the Basque word for spikes, which are similar to tapas but often served on skewers or small pieces of bread. The region's cuisine also features plenty of fish, seafood and hearty stews, perfect for the cooler northern climate. The Basque Country is famous for its incredible food scene and has one of the highest numbers of Michelin stars per capita in the world, meaning the region is home to some top-tier restaurants!
I’m taking a gastronomy course here, so I’ve had the chance to cook some traditional Basque and Spanish dishes! So far, I’ve made marmitako (a tuna stew), paella (a Spanish rice dish), and sukalki (a beef stew), all of which I enjoyed both cooking and eating! I’ve also tried many varieties of pintxos in Bilbao and San Sebastián, which is about an hour away and home to some of the best restaurants in Spain.
