Botswana Communities have Tribal Roots

Many of the people in smaller villages have not been educated beyond the 7th grade or 10th grade. Not moving on to the senior levels of the High School equivalent limits an individual's ability to pursue higher paying employment.

Why does the community have this need?:

High unemployment is a complex problem and is related to limited job creation away from the traditional agricultural employment opportunities of the past. Industries of manufacturing and technology require many millions of dollars or "Pula", the currency in Botswana, to grow companies up to a level that can create and sustain jobs. There simply are not high numbers of persons with lots of money to invest in these economies as of yet, although it is slowly increasing. The number of educated individuals above the 10th grade level is a small portion of the the nations population. Individuals with limited education, typically, have limited options such as working as an unskilled laborer, doing short term assignments that do not offer stability.  Oftentimes, parents have to choose the option of staying home and remaining unemployed to care for the needs of their children. Skilled or tech sector employment is often not available to anyone other than highly educated people.

Is this need being met? How?:

The need to create jobs in the Botswana economy has not yet happened to a significant extent. There are initiatives to bring industries of manufacturing and technology to Botswana. There is also a program that promotes foreign companies to expand to Botswana and some of these are slowly entering into the economy and creating some jobs. This effort will take time and significantly more investment.
