Bobo! That means hello in the local language, Chichewa. I hope you guys are doing well and have had a great week, I know I have! Today I want to really set the scene for the rest of our journey together and give you context to help better understand life and perspectives of people here in Malawi. In addition to the journal this week, I have also stringed together some recent videos from my camera roll that do a really good job of letting you guys see what I see every day out here in Malawi. I will try my best to cover most of the basics when it comes to culture and daily life. So, let’s get right into it!
In Malawi, the sun rises around 5 am and sets around 6pm. During this time there is a lot of work to do. In fact, most people arise anywhere between 4-5am. I remember my first week at the school and the Headteacher (principal) telling me how she has been requesting that students arise at 3-4am so that they can study under candle light in preparation for the day’s school. I was shocked and had to ask her again to make sure I heard the time correctly. Although, I have even found myself waking up earlier and earlier while I am here.
