Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

I traveled around 130 miles from Waszawa (Warsaw in Polish).

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

Since leaving Boston, I have traveled around 4,500 miles to finally arrive in Chełm.

How did I get around this week?:

This week, I used the train to get from Warszawa to Chełm. It takes about four and a half hours right now because the tracks are largely under construction, but overall it is a very nice way to travel. The tickets only cost about 40 złoty or $10 (in U.S. dollars), and they are pretty reliable in Poland.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

The most interesting place that I visited this week was Old Town in Warszawa. During World War II, the Polish people attempted to kick the German occupation out of Warsaw. They were told that the Russian army would help them once the fighting began because the army was just across the river, however when the fighting started, the Russians never came to their aid. The German army decimated the Polish rebellion, burning Warsaw to the ground and killing 150,000-200,000 Polish civilians and expelling another 700,000 from the city. When Poland began to rebuild, they wanted to capture some of old Warsaw so they built the Old Town. Despite the buildings looking old, they are the same age as the rest of the city which I found very interesting.
