Travel in Poland is very similar to travel in the U.S. in terms of what modes of transportation are available for short distances. The biggest difference is the widespread use of trains to travel farther distances here in Poland. The train system in Poland is extensive and can be an inexpensive alternative to driving a car across the country. Since most trains run on time and efficiently, it is very different from the United States as well as other parts of Europe.
For short-term travel, most people in Poland use bikes or walk within their cities. Larger cities have buses to bring people from place to place, but Chełm only has a few since it is a smaller area. Cars are also often used, however, they all have manual transmission, unlike automatic cars that are more popular in the U.S. The most common mode of long-distance transportation in Poland is by train. I have used the trains five times since coming to Poland to get back and forth from Chełm to Warszawa (Warsaw) and Lublin.
