It's a "technical" high school, so instead of offering traditional classes like math and reading, it prepares students for practical careers. For example, students can choose to take classes about hospitality, tourism, or civil engineering, among others. For example, one class teaches students about the flora and fauna (plants and animals) of Costa Rica.
There is a lot of math and a lot of reading that students take home to do. Most of the homework kids have is physical, meaning they do it with a paper and pencil. There are very few online assignments because not everyone in town has reliable access to a computer, and power outages frequently disrupt access to the internet.
After school, a lot of kids like to go to the plaza in the center of town to play soccer, or futbol, as it's called here in Costa Rica. Another popular after-school activity is band! High school students practice for parades and events after they wrap up classes. Tronadora's band has drums, saxophones, flutes and lyras, which are sort of like a cross between a harp and a xylophone.
Basketball is surprisingly popular here in Costa Rica, so a lot of kids dream of getting to meet Lebron James or Steph Curry. Still, soccer reigns supreme, and the number one celebrity here is undoubtedly Ronaldo.
