Traveling to the Peatlands

To help us get around, we first load our big truck called "Sparkles" with all the equipment needed for our studies in the field. It's important that we don't forget anything! Imagine being so far from home, and in a remote place, then realizing you needed a pair of gloves that you didn’t bring? That would not be fun. We also bring all the food that is cheaper here in an urban area than there, a remote place.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

The drive is very long and can be tiring! The last big city we drove through before we got to White River is called "Sault Ste. Marie." Sometimes, when we are too tired to drive all the way, we stop in this city and spend the night to rest. For dinner, we always have a sandwich in Wawa, another town one hour away from our final destination.

Finally, by the time we get there, it is already the evening and we are exhausted. Here is the peak of our trip, living in a big trailer for the time we work in the field! We call the trailer "FenDen" and it is a very cozy place to stay. The FenDen is a three-bedroom trailer that never leaves its parking area. There, we also have a kitchen, a dining table, a couch, TV and a lab area where we work once we are back from the peatland.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

Now we are still not in the peatlands themselves. While we made it into town, the peatlands are about 30 kilometers from our field home, and three kilometers distant from each other (we work in two different peatlands). So, next morning we drive early in the morning to the field. We park Sparkles and walk about one kilometer to get to the first peatland area.
