There are two main seasons in Tonosí: the wet season (about May-November) and the dry season (about December-April). The district has a little bit of everything, including beaches, mountains, valleys, rivers and lots of farmland! Tonosí is also where I am doing my Hantavirus research project. It is about a 5.5-hour car ride away from Panama City, where I live. Tonosí is an incredible region of Panama and I feel very lucky to get to do my research there. The environment (especially the weather) in Tonosí heavily influences people's day-to-day lives.
Tonosí, Panama has a little bit of everything! Tonosí has some of the most fertile lands in the country. This means the land is very good for growing crops. Tonosí is one of the biggest producers of rice, as well. Farmers in this region also grow tomatos, melon, mangoes, pumpkin, watermelon and corn. Another large part of the economy of Tonosí is raising cows for milk and meat. The Tonosí District also has some of the most beautiful beaches in Panama because it is on the coast of the Pacific Ocean! One of the beaches, Isla Cañas, is where hundreds of sea turtles come to lay their eggs. The high season for turtle nesting is from July-November.
