When people saw what I was pointing to, mostly they laughed because it did not bother them. I was completely grossed out. However, these cats are wild so they are used to hunting. Also abundant on the island are bats. I hate bats. But the cats love the bats. We saw a cat jump up in the air and snag a bat with its paws. It didn’t eat the bat because the bat flew up from the ground in time and also because I shrieked again in fear loud enough for all to hear.
Because the environment is very touristy, this means that there are lots of restaurants. Lots of restaurants mean lots of food waste at the end of the day. So there were plenty of garbage bins for cats to choose from and some of them looked like they were having a great time. Also, tourists are fond of cats. Since they look so cute, cuddly and relaxing, people like my friend Liza will reach out and start scratching the cats. Of course, the cats love the attention and start purring which just prolongs the head-scratching. Liza loves cats because she has some at home and so she kept petting stray cats everywhere we went.
Mostly the cats take care of themselves. Some cats do drown when they slip off the pier dock and probably panic like humans. For the most part though, cats know how to swim and are equipped with claws and sharp teeth to defend themselves from most harm. I think most people on the island take care of the cats so I don’t think there is any cause for worry.
