Carnival al Estilo Cubano: Celebrating Los Indianos in La Palma

Instead of the typical ostentatious and glittery Carnival costumes, people wear elegant clothing that is all-white from the 1920s/1930s as an homage to the emigrants who left La Palma, headed to Cuba and then back to La Palma as a parody to the 'wealth' these people brought back with them from the Caribbean. The day was filled with live bands, lots of rum and clouds of baby powder, as people threw the powder on each other throughout the day. This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience I'll never forget.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

This celebration honors people that have left Spain, headed for the Caribbean and that now have come back to Spain. It also celebrates the idea of the once vibrant island that was Cuba, which has experienced severe poverty and hardship since the start of Castro's dictatorship in the 1960s.
