Twenty-Five Names and Counting: Meet the Hefekerl

After November 11th passes and this date approaches, stores and families will often make their Hefekerl in the St. Nikolous style, instead.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

With his collection of names and the two holidays that he is celebrated with, the Hefekerl is certainly connected to the environment and the community that is celebrating with him. Although he is recognized throughout all of Germany, each region makes Hefekerl to varying degrees and in different settings. He is most popular in the southwest of Germany, where St. Martinstag is a larger event, but other areas will incorporate this food into their St. Nikoloustag events, or just as a Christmas treat. Regardless of the particular use or name he is given, Hefekerl represents a significant piece of German culinary culture.
