Celebrating Together: Birthdays in Perú

At the birthday I attended this past week, we prepared picante de cuy and shared cake. Then, each person took a turn saying a few words to the person celebrating.

That moment really stood out to me. People shared kind words, memories and gratitude, and you could see how much it meant to the person being celebrated. It felt very personal and it showed how much people care about one another. It’s not just about gifts or cake—it’s about being together and making someone feel valued. Experiencing birthdays here has helped me see how traditions can be similar around the world, but also unique in how they bring people together.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

I think this tradition exists because birthdays are a way for people to show care and appreciation for one another. In my community, relationships and spending time together are very important, so celebrating a birthday becomes more than just marking a date—it’s a chance to bring people together. It gives friends, family and neighbors time to connect, share food and strengthen their bonds.

I also noticed that these celebrations don’t have to be big or expensive to be meaningful. What matters most is being present and celebrating as a group. This tradition reflects how much the community values togetherness, support and making people feel important on their special day.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Yes, I think this tradition is connected to the environment in a few important ways.
