Three Kings Day in Spain

Introduction:

While discussing traditions with my host family, they told me about el Día de los Reyes Magos, or Three Kings Day. The holiday is on January 6th and celebrates the end of Christmas.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned about the tradition of the Cabalgata de Reyes, or the Three Kings Parade, held in Spain on the evening of January 5th. It has floats featuring the Three Wise Men, and they toss candy and sweets to the children to symbolize their journey to bring gifts to Jesus. That same night, children will leave their shoes out for gifts and sweets to be delivered to them overnight. Additionally, they will eat a traditional King's Cake (Roscón de Reyes), shaped like a crown with crystallized fruit and sugar.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The community celebrates this day as it represents a religious moment for them. Given that it symbolizes the moment when the Three Wise Men gave baby Jesus gifts, they consider it a main gift-giving holiday that brings everyone in the community together.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

This tradition is connected to its environment because it is celebrated within the local streets, community spaces, and more. For example, the parade takes place outdoors in city plazas, central areas, and public squares.
