Thus, it is important to respect the religion of the local culture by understanding, but not criticizing, the practices. This is an important part of multicultural awareness. One way my Fulbright friends and I have approached this is by sharing one Red Lantern to cut down on waste while also celebrating with local families. Likewise, the Taiwanese are very environmentally conscious, so, for example, we collectively strive to protect the environment by properly recycling fallen Red Lanterns if we find them on the ground.
