Up Close with Capybaras

In general, due to climate change, droughts and unpredictable dry seasons can also deprive capybaras of water sources that they depend heavily upon.

Currently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the capybara as “Least Concern,” meaning that its populations are large and widespread. As such, while the species as a whole is not threatened, scientists are more concerned about the growing need to protect wetland ecosystems. Healthy wetlands are crucial for supporting not only capybaras but also birds, fish and other animals that coexist with capybaras in the wild.
